W. Clinton Carter, Jr.

November 11, 1926 ~ December 7, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old

William Clinton Carter Jr., 91, of Lake City, South Carolina, died Thursday, 7 December 2017 in his Summerville home.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, 12 December 2017 at the Lake City Presbyterian Church, 300 East Main Street, Lake City, South Carolina, directed by Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton, South Carolina. A reception will immediately follow the service.

Clinton was born 11 November 1926 in Lake City, South Carolina to William C. “Doc” Carter and Sadie McElveen Carter. He attended Furman University, graduating in 1948. While at Furman Clinton was a proud member and officer of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. It was at Furman that he met Betty Ballentine, the love of his life, whom he married on 25 September 1948. Clinton worked with his father in Ft. Lauderdale as a produce buyer for Safeway Stores and Gerber Foods for the next five years. In 1954 he returned to Lake City with his new family and opened Superior Cleaners and Laundry which he operated until 2005. In 1962 Clinton became a member of the Board of Directors of the Lake City State Bank and served as the Chairman of the Board from 1967-1987. A lifelong member of Lake City Presbyterian Church, Clinton served on the Session for 15 years, two of those as Clerk of Session.

Few hearts have ever been as big; few eyes have ever shined with more gentle mischief. Clinton was an avid explorer, a walking history of the town he loved, and a born storyteller. He quite literally never met a stranger. He was a cornerstone of his community, a man whose legacy of humble generosity lives in all those whose lives he helped to make just a little better.

Clinton is survived by his three children, Dr. William C. Carter, III (Dorothy), Dr. H. Ballentine Carter (Lillian), and Sara E. Carter (Lori Goodwin); four grandchildren, Julia Carter, Dr. Louisa C. Staton (Evan), Abby C. Goodwin and Harley C. Goodwin.

The Family wishes to express their deep appreciation and grateful thanks to those who have helped them minister faithful and loving care to Clinton: Shirley Howard, Peggy Palmer, and Esther Pryor and also to the caring staff of Roper Hospice.

Memorials may be made to Lake City Concert Series PO Box 477, Lake City, SC, 29560 or to Lake City Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1747, Lake City, SC 29560.
