Reverend Laverne Benjamin Smith

Reverend Laverne Benjamin Smith, 83, husband of Clara W. Smith, died Saturday, December 2, 2017, at McLeod Hospice House, after an illness. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M., Tuesday, December 5, 2017, Bible Outreach Church, Lake City, with burial to follow at Floyd Chapel Cemetery, Lake City.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M., Monday, December 4, 2017, at Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton.

Rev. Smith was born on May 21, 1934 in Williamsburg County, son of the late Dewey Smith and Alice Broach Smith. He was a graduate of Lake City High School, and received an A.B. degree from Palmer College, Charleston. He attended Georgia College in Carrollton, GA and earned a B.A. degree in Biblical Studies from Southwestern College in Oklahoma City. In 1976, Rev. Smith received a Doctorate of Divinity from the Bible Institute of America. He was a retired minister in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church Conference and was the author of two books.

Surviving are his wife, Clara W. Smith of Coward; son, Howard K. (Pam) Smith) of Coward; daughters, Alice (Doug) Robinson of Turbeville and Dana W. (Chris Tisdale) Lewis of Coward; grandchildren, Crystal (Jason) Harris, Amanda (Jared) Cook, Christopher (Ashley) Hill, Catherine (Caleb Hutchinson) Smith, Leah (Timothy) Reese, Jim (Julia Ann) Kennedy, Allison (Justin) Mulleur and Mary Ashley Robinson;; three great grandchildren; brothers, Harry Smith of Lake City, Clifton (Marion) Smith of Florida, Jerry (Vanessa) Smith of Lake City; and a special niece, Melanie (Lanny) Bellflowers.

Rev. Smith was preceded in death by his first wife, Florice D. Smith; daughters, Charlotte Marie Smith, Sandra Kay Smith, and Audrey Lynn Smith; son, Wendell Smith; and sisters, Marie S. McKenzie and Letha S. McKnight.

The family would like extend a special thanks to his caregiver, Sandy Rogers.
