Rachel Whitehead Henry

Mrs. Rachel Whitehead Henry, 94, died peacefully Friday, September 22, 2017, in her Lake City home.  Rachel called Lake City, SC home her entire life, so much so that she became affectionately known as “Miss Rachel” by all who knew her.  She was born July 12, 1923, to the late William Henry Whitehead and Maude Ellis Whitehead.  She worked for many years in the US Selective Service during WWII and later at Wentworth Manufacturing in Lake City.

Miss Rachel was always known to stay active, and her interests ranged from gardening to writing to spending time with her family and working on family history.  One of Miss Rachel’s true delights was being around children, as she taught kindergarten and served as den mother for her son’s local Cub Scout Troop.  Her love for children was apparent to anyone who was fortunate enough to witness her provide entertainment for children at birthday parties or as Mother Goose on a local radio station (WJOT), in which she sang songs and told stories during a children program. 

Miss Rachel was also active in the community, she was a member of the Tiara Garden Club, a current and active member of the local Red Hat Club, a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church and Edna Poston Sunday School class, speaker and member of the First Baptist DMA club, she wrote a social column for several years for the Lake City News and Post, and she remained active with Classmates and Friends. 

Rachel is preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. (Edd) Henry, Sr., of Lake City, SC and her daughter, Dr. Martha Henry-Boger, of Clover, SC. 

Rachel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. (Edd) Henry, Jr. and Suzanne Henry of Sparta, TN; son-in-law, Paul D. Boger, Jr., of Clover, SC; grandson, Andrew E. Henry of Sparta, TN; granddaughters, Lorena Boger Pate (Eric) of Sumter, SC; Dr. Heather Anne Boger of Charleston, SC; Paula Danielle Boger of Clover, SC; Alissa Leigh Henry Perry (Brent) of Spring Hill, TN; great-grandson Logan Henry; and great-granddaughter McKay Perry. 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 25, 2017, at Lake City First Baptist Church.  Burial, directed by Carolina Funeral Home, will follow at Lake City Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, Monday, September 25, 2017, at Lake City First Baptist Church Family Life Center. 

 In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to charity of one’s choice.
