Miriam Cockfield Obituary

Miriam Chandler Cockfield, 93, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 26, 2019. A daughter of the late Samuel Richardson Chandler and Phila Suggs Chandler, she grew up in Florence County and attended the public schools here before graduating from USC with a BS degree in education.

Miriam, originally from Lake City, had a home on Lake Murray in Lexington County for 31 years.  She retired in 1991 after teaching school for 41 years in seven states, including 16 years with the Lexington county schools.

Miriam acquired a love for travelling and reading from her mother.  She began travelling to see some of the places she read about, and visited every state except Alaska.  In 1975 she bicycled from Charleston to Santa Monica in 30 days. During that time she pedaled more than 2,600 miles averaging 88 miles a day. With her love of adventure, she traveled the world. In 1990 she, visited Japan and in one afternoon, hiked 13, 000 feet to the top of Mount Fuji with no problems. Five years later, at the age of 69, Miriam traveled to Africa, where among her adventures, after six days of climbing, she topped the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.  At 19,340 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa.

Miriam developed a deep love and respect for the animal kingdom during her life and became very involved with many animal societies that rescued homeless and abused dogs.  She personally rescued many dogs over her life and fulfilled the scripture in proverbs that states’ a righteous person has respect for the life on the animal.”

Miriam was a well-educated and adventurous southern Christian lady who the Lord blessed with a long life and who will be greatly missed.

At her request, funeral services will be private.
