Estelle Virginia Miles Matthews, 96, wife of the late John Luther "J. L." Matthews, Jr., died Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at her residence.
Mrs. Matthews was born on December 13, 1922 in Florence County, daughter of the late Ocie Almon "Shug" Miles and Vindell Jordan Miles. She was a member of The Bible Temple and the Eastern Star. Her favorite hobbies included growing flowers, sewing and spending time with her family.
Surviving are her son, Billy (Gail) Matthews of Effingham; 8 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; sisters, Martha Ann Gause of Ladson, Vivian McAlister and Novie Jo (Dempsey) Braveboy, both of Coward; daughters-in-law, Charlotte Matthews, Rhonda Matthews and Vickie Lane; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her sons, Jerry L. Matthews, Harry S. Matthews and James Russel Matthews; brother, Ocie A. Miles, Jr.; sisters, Mary Evelyn Evans and Gertrude Filyaw; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Matthews; brother-in-law, Badger Gause.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Coward Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.
