Betty Carolyn DuRant Obituary

Betty Carolyn Ammons DuRant, 84, wife of the late James Edgar DuRant, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends, on Friday morning, January 04, 2019, at Commander Nursing Home after a long illness.  She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved her children and grandbabies.  She loved music and at the early age of thirteen self-taught herself to play the piano, and later the accordion and organ.  She loved to use her talents to play music and sing to the glory of her loving Savior and God.

Betty was born on June 16, 1934, and was the youngest child and daughter of Phillip Cicero Ammons and Frances Ozella “Ella” Moore Ammons of Prospect, SC. Betty married James Edgar on April 3, 1953. She was a charter member and the first pianist and organist of the Prospect Pentecostal Holiness Church.  She was also a former member of the gospel group, the Singing Couriers of Bennettsville, South Carolina. Mrs. DuRant was retired as the Human Resources Administrative Assistant from PolyOne (formally, Colonial Rubber Works Inc.), Kingstree, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2019 in Prospect Pentecostal Holiness Church, 213 Half Moon Road, Lake City, SC 29560 officiated by Rev. Lloyd Ackerman, Rev. Chad Jones, and the Rev. Joseph White.  Pallbearers are Dustin Eaddy, Danny DuRant, Gregg DuRant, Chris DuRant, James Lyerly, John Wayne Todd, Michael Todd and Honorary Pallbearer, Jay W. McDaniel.  Burial, directed by Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton, SC, will follow in the Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 3135 Johnsonville Highway, Lake City, SC.

The family will greet friends and family on Monday, January 7, 2019, from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Prospect Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving are her son, Joey (Ann) DuRant of Hemingway, SC; daughter Midge (Dwayne) Lyerly of Lake City (Browntown Community), SC; grandchildren, Joanna Elizabeth and Holly Michelle DuRant of Hemingway, SC, Elizabeth (Dustin) Eaddy of Florence, SC, and James Lyerly of Greenville, SC; two Great-grandchildren, Camden Crocker and Noah Eaddy. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Danny Laverne (Dottie) DuRant, and sister-in-law, Vonnie DuRant and many nieces, and nephews.

Mrs. DuRant was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Eugene (Eunice Marsh) Ammons, and Beaty Deleon (Theola Humphries) Ammons, and two sisters, Olive (David) Ammons McDaniel, and Vera (Joe Sylvester) Ammons Todd.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and nurses of Commander Nursing Home and to the Intensive care unit 337 and room 508 nurses and staff of McLeod Regional Medical Center.
