Alvena Belflower Obituary

Alvena Eaddy Belflower, 98, died Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Born on January 19, 1921 in Hemingway, South Carolina, Evelyn Alvena Eaddy Belflower was the second of five children born to Vaughan Cox Eaddy and Felix Rufus Eaddy. She outlived all of her beloved siblings and their spouses: Eulene Eaddy Scott (Lucius Scott), Crafton Eaddy (Nancy Stuckey), Blona Lee Eaddy Taylor (Jack Taylor), and Bill Eaddy (Jesene Harrell).

In September of 1939, she married Thomas Devoe Belflower, Sr., son of Taylor Dalton Belflower and Mollie Edwards Belflower. After marrying, she lived in Hyman, South Carolina; Wildwood, New Jersey; Sumter, South Carolina; and eventually settled in Lake City, South Carolina.

Thomas and Alvena’s four children are Bonnie Belflower Calcutt (Reverend W. H. Calcutt) of Dunn, North Carolina; Professor Betty Belflower Long of Lexington, Kentucky; Thomas “Tommy” Belflower, Jr. (Phyllis Horton) of Lake City, South Carolina; and Professor Alisa Belflower of Lincoln, Nebraska. Her family has grown to include nine grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren — totaling fifty-three in her family. She is survived by all her children and their children as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She graduated from Hemingway High School and operated Belflower General Merchandise beside Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Pamplico, South Carolina. She was the oldest living member of Mt. Zion, where she was teacher of the adult ladies’ Sunday School Class for over two decades and worked in the office of Church Clerk for forty-one years, in addition to her other work for the church.

She enjoyed working in her yard, baking cakes, exercising with her physical therapists, collecting angels, and reading the Bible. Her heart’s desire was to serve the Lord and to take care of her family and friends, which she lovingly did for ninety-eight years.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held at First Baptist Church in Lake City on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the church fellowship hall before the service. Graveside services will be Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the music programs at either Lake City First Baptist Church, PO Box 820, Lake City, SC 29560 or where she was the oldest living member, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1883 S. Pamplico Hwy. Pamplico, SC 29583.
