Roger Wayne Matthews, 62, of Continental, Ohio, formerly of the High Hill Community near Scranton, South Carolina, died Thursday, March 18, 2010.
Wayne was born August 13, 1947, in Florence County, South Carolina, a son of Alice Hutchinson Matthews and the late Carter Matthews. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving with the 557th Military Police at Long Bihn Prison Camp during the Vietnam Conflict. After his discharge, he worked for S.O.C.A.R. in Florence and later transferred to Continental, Ohio, where he continued working for S.O.C.A.R. and New Millennium Building Systems retiring after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, a Syndocal Authorized Minister with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and a former member of High Hill Free Will Baptist Church in Scranton, South Carolina. Mr. Matthews was a member of the Continental American Legion Post 541, a court-appointed special advocate for children in Putnam and Allen Counties, charter member of the Continental Lion’s Club, and a 40 year member of the Free and Accepted Masons in South Carolina and Ohio.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 P.M. Sunday, April 18, 2010, at High Hill Free Will Baptist Church, Scranton, South Carolina.
Surviving include his mother, Alice H. Matthews of Scranton, SC; his wife, Wendy Jo Noffsinger Matthews of Continental, OH; his sons, Alexander Matthews and his wife, Rebekah of Lima, Shannon Matthews and his wife, Denise of Cloverdale and Jason Matthews of Dayton; his brother, Rick Matthews and his wife, Eula Mae of Darlington, SC; his sister, Betty M. Corkwell and her husband, Larry of Continental, OH; and two grandchildren.
