SCRANTON: Mr. George Douglas Powell, 81, formerly of Johnsonville, and husband of the late Betty Jean Bass Powell, died Monday, November 30, 2009, at his residence after an illness.

Mr. Powell was born December 20, 1927, in Horry County, South Carolina, a son of the late John Hartford Powell and Ottie Graham Powell. He retired as supervisor in 2008 from the City of Johnsonville, and he was a member of Johnsonville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mr. Powell was a veteran of the United States Army.

Surviving are a son, Charles R. Powell and his wife, Myra of Scranton; grandson, Chet Barnhill of Georgetown; step-grandson, Phillip Lynch of Florence; step-granddaughter, Katrina Eaddy and her husband, Eddie of Coward; and two step-great, great granddaughters, Alyssa Eaddy and Kinsey Eaddy, both of Coward. Mr. Powell was predeceased by a daughter, Teresa P. Hanna; and two brothers, William H. Powell and Jack Powell.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Carolina Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Martin Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Lake Chapel Cemetery, Johnsonville, South Carolina.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Carolina Funeral Home, 215 E. Highway 378 ByPass, Scranton, SC.
