PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC: Mr. Everett Calvin Smith, 87, husband of Ernestine Conway Smith, died Monday, October 5, 2009, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital after an illness.

Mr. Smith was born August 8, 1922, in Jersey City, NJ, a son of the late Samuel Willard Smith and Hazel Mason Smith. He grew up in Bernardsville, NJ, and graduated from Bernards High School. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA, and his Master’s Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ. Before coming to Johnsonville, SC, he was formerly employed for fifteen years with Allied Chemical Corporation of Morristown, NJ, in the Research Department, and as a consultant with DeBell & Richardson of Hazardville, CT. Mr. Smith retired as Vice-President of Research and Development from Wellman Industries, Inc., Johnsonville, SC. He was a US Army veteran having served in World War II, a member of the Johnsonville American Legion Post #144 and a life-long member of the VFW.

Surviving are his wife of fifty-eight years, Ernestine Conway Smith of Pawleys Island; two daughters, Patricia S. (Michael) Evans of Florence and Christine Smith of Johnsonville; three grandchildren, Amanda (Dale) Owens of Johnsonville, Paul Richard Evans of Florence and Catherine Lee Evans of Florence; one great grandson, Taylor Strickland of Johnsonville; and one sister, Nancy S. Sabbagh of New Providence, NJ. He was predeceased by a brother, Willard S. Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, 1633 Waverly Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Carolina Funeral Home, 215 East Highway 378 ByPass, Scranton, SC, is in charge of arrangements.
