LAKE City: Mrs. Elizabeth Pond Zimmerman, 93, formerly of Wilmington, NC, died Saturday, October 31, 2009, in Carolinas Hospital System, Florence, SC, of age related causes.
Mrs. Zimmerman was born April 29, 1916, in Roselle Park, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Harry Bradford Pond and Cora Belle Dartt Pond. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to South America (Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina) where she spent most of her childhood. She attended Colby Junior College in New London, New Hampshire, where she studied as a medical secretary. She played the violin in the college orchestra while at Colby. When she worked at Smith College in Northampton, MA, she was an accomplished soloist. After she was married, she was a soloist for the Congregational Church in Plainfield, New Jersey. Mrs. Zimmerman owned a boutique in Wilmington, NC, along with a friend, Dee Martin, before she retired. She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC. She was married first to Norman Smith Burdett who died in 1948 and then to John Foster Zimmerman who died in 1967.
Surviving are her children, Mary Abigail Spivey of Lake City, Norman Bruce Burdett and his wife, Patricia Elizabeth, of Austin, TX, Bradford Pond Zimmerman and his wife, Ellen, of Loganville, GA, Cora Mae Pipkin and her husband, Joseph Russell, of Trenton, NC, and John Harry Zimmerman of Wilmington, NC; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are planned for a later date in Wilmington, NC.
